Holocaust Heroes and Martyrs Remembrance Day
In addition to April 25 being ANZAC day in the Antipodes, I've recently discovered that it's Holocaust Heroes and Martyrs Remembrance Day as well. I did see a kid on campus reciting a list of names in front of the chappel on campus ealier today and was curious what that was about, so now I know.
There is a Buddhist story about an old monk and a young monk walking together, when they come to a stream. On the bank is a woman, who is afraid to cross because the stream is rather swift. Without a word, the old monk picks her up, wades across the water, puts her down on the other side, and proceeds on his way. The young monk catches up, and the two walk in silence for a while, but it is clear the young monk is getting madder and madder. Finally, he can keep it in no longer, and he explodes: 'How can you do such a thing? Have you forgotten your vows? We are sworn not to touch women; how can you possibly have done what you did?' The older monk replied: 'I left her back there at the stream. Why are you still carrying her?'
